Elderwerks Becomes a Safe Moves for Seniors Chapter
Friday March 29, 2024 - Jennifer Prell
Elderwerks Educational Services has become a Chapter of Safe Moves for Seniors, a national nonprofit that relocates qualifying seniors in need at no cost.
When Jennifer Prell founded Elderwerks Educational Services in 2012, it was always a goal to help deserving and at-risk seniors in the community with their aging needs.
While attending the NASMM® (National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers) annual conference for Senior Move Managers®, Jill Yesko Diana, a colleague in Pennsylvania, announced that she was growing the nonprofit she founded beyond her region, Jennifer Prell wanted to join her in the endeavor. “This nonprofit is filling in a much-needed gap in our communities and knowing the quality move managers and movers to provide this service with compassion closes this gap. The work that we are doing will go a long way to alleviate housing insecurity in northern Illinois”, Yesko Diana shared.
Safe Moves for Seniors will help older adults by making their new homes safer to physically navigate by professionally decluttering and downsizing their possessions before their transition. Professional Senior & Specialty Move Managers (SMM) will also unpack and organize the new home. “Most seniors prefer to age in place. Sometimes, they live in unsafe conditions and neglect themselves due to their inability to move. "We want to change the narrative and help them move forward into a full life," said Jennifer Prell, a Certified Senior Move Manager, Dementia Reality Specialist, and Safe Moves for Seniors Chapter director out of Northern Illinois. In the United States, over 15 million – or 1 in 3 -older adults aged 65 and older are economically insecure, with incomes below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). This nonprofit seeks to serve this population specifically and reduce the instances of older adults seeking assistance for housing needs in places such as emergency rooms and understaffed county assistance offices.
As a local area office of Safe Moves for Seniors, donations are being accepted and can be made directly on the website. Seniors ages 60 and up seeking the services must complete an online application process and meet financial thresholds to qualify. Contact: Jennifer Prell, 847-462-0885
